The therapeutic effects of dogs and cats are well-known. Loyal and kind, pets provide comfort to their owners, boosting their physical and psychological well-being.

Much of this comfort comes from the pet’s physical presence. Holding or patting an animal, for example, can reduce stress and provide a moment of respite during an otherwise busy day.

Pets also have an uncanny ability to pick up on people’s emotions. They seem to know when we are feeling blue, and may respond with a nudge or a lick. Pets encourage us to play, too. When a dog’s around, even the most reserved person will engage in a childlike game of tug of war.

But perhaps the most important thing pets provide us with is unconditional love.
