Your dog’s dietary needs will change as he ages, so you won’t be able to feed Fido that rich puppy food forever! When he stops growing taller, you’ll need to switch him over to adult dog food. His breed will determine exactly when that process should occur. Small breeds tend to mature at around one year of age, but it may take some large breeds, like the German Shepherd, two years to stop getting taller.
When you do make the transition, do so gradually so that you don’t upset your dog’s stomach. Start by switching about a quarter of your pup’s dinner to adult food, and then slowly increase the percentage over a period of about two weeks. Soon your dog will be eating one-hundred-percent adult dog food.
