What is a dog license and how do I know if I need one?

If you get a new dog, you’ll likely be required to purchase a dog license from your city or county. There’s generally a fee for this license, but it’s more than a mere formality – the license and accompanying tag may help keep your dog safe. For example, a lost or impounded dog can be identified by its license tag and returned to its owner.

Requirements for the license generally include a rabies certificate, signed by your veterinarian. So people who come into contact with a licensed dog can also be sure that it’s not rabid.
