I just adopted an older dog who doesn't seem to have any training. Are there different training issues (than with a puppy) I need to be aware of?

When you’re working with a dog, it’s important to establish a positive relationship based on trust.
Mary Lee Nitschke, a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist and Professor of Psychology at Linfield College in Oregon says, “and that means that the dog is able to depend on you to be somewhat predictable, and that you provide the management and structure and guidelines that allows the dog to know what to expect.”
She says structure is especially critical for an adult dog that may not be accustomed to new experiences. She also recommends using non-punitive training techniques so that you don’t further contribute to any anxiety the dog may already have.
