What is a designer dog breed?

The term “designer dogs” may conjure up images of celebrities and fashion runways, but in reality, designer dogs are simply hybrid breeds. Take for example, the Labradoodle—a cross between a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle—or the Cavapoo—a mix between a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Poodle.
Hybrid dogs differ from mixed-breeds because they are the product of two unique, carefully-selected purebred dogs. They are not bred at random. The idea is to get a puppy with the best characteristics of each breed. Although the puppy could end up with any trait from either breed, the results are generally positive and can produce some unique family pets. After all, what makes a dog special is not its name, but how well it fits in with your family.
