A dog can be a kid’s best friend, but until pups get used to children it’s important to learn how to keep your child safe around the family dog.

Toddlers are often at a dog’s eye level, and their high-pitched cries and direct gaze may elicit aggression in some dogs. Not to mention the fact that young kids often pull a pup’s tail or fur.

So make sure to show your child how to be gentle and respect pets. And socialize your dog to kids as early as possible. Take the pup to a playground with the children at a safe distance, and reward the dog with treats and praise for calm behavior.

Bassett hounds, golden retrievers, collies and labs are breeds that are less likely to snap at children. But no matter what kind of dog you have, keep an eye on your pet the kids are around!
